   Manuscript Appraisals

All types of manuscripts appraised, except
Scientific & Technical, Academic, Religious or Poetry.

Getting your manuscript read and assessed is the first step to successful publishing.

What you can expect from us

Our intention is to help you see your work from a publisher's perspective.
We offer you a written report, which is our opinion of how we believe a publisher will react to the work and why.

  • The M.A.A. does not publish or edit manuscripts, but gives a commercial evaluation on content and advice as to how to get the manuscript to a standard acceptable by literary agents and publishers.
  • The M.A.A. provides a minimum of two pages of written evaluation by a senior editor, looking at such areas as style, story flow, character development, general interest and commercial viability.
  • Those manuscripts that the M.A.A. believes are commercially viable may be presented to a publisher through an associated literary agent as appropriate but only after consultation with the author.
  • In a highly competitive market, you have to make publishers pay attention.
Submitting your manuscript to the M.A.A. gives you, the author,
the competitive edge in the tough world of publishing.

Conditions for submitting a manuscript for appraisal

  • All manuscripts must be original unpublished works. They must be submitted by the author or authors or with the written permission of the author.
  • Privacy of the author will be respected. Names of assessors used by M. A. A. shall remain anonymous to ensure their privacy.
  • While every care is taken to preserve the manuscript and associated submissions, no responsibility is accepted for any loss or damage, no matter how it occurs. It is strongly recommended that the author retains the original of all manuscripts and associated documents submitted.
  • A synopsis of the work - of no more than two pages - must be submitted with each manuscript. Wherever possible, authors are asked to include a short author profile, along with any other relevant information about the work.
  • Receipt of each manuscript will be acknowledged by mail and a report will be sent to the author when the manuscript is returned (no later than 8 weeks after it arrives at M.A.A.).
  • The manuscript should be neatly typed on even-sized paper (preferably, double spaced), with pages numbered.
  • The author of the work must be at least 18 years of age, or have a parent or guardian's written approval to submit the manuscript.
